Recycling doesn’t just stop with us reusing the liquid waste we have treated, as with all types of waste treatment there is generally a by-product created after treatment. With liquid waste facilities, this is known as bio-solids or cake, normally this by-product is dried out and disposed of to a landfill site to be again buried, making it someone else’s problem.
We have decided to break the trend and put our waste to better use.
In March 2016 Abbott’s were granted a license from DWER to commence building a composting facility adjacent to our current liquid waste facility. The idea would be to blend 2x waste products - our bio-solids/sludge waste with wood waste created from the local forestry industry to produce a quality carbon and nutrient-rich compost fit for resale.
We have now produced several batches of compost and had it screened and tested for nutrient loadings, weeds, seeds and pathogens with the end results satisfying the Australian Standard AS 4454-2012 for compost and soil conditioners.
In February 2019 we were granted an amendment to our license to start selling our compost on a commercial scale for the agricultural industry.
